World Cancer Day

Cancer is an aggressive disease that has affected over 15.5 million Americans and will affect an estimated 1.7 million in the coming year. World Cancer Day is a time for us, as health care professionals, to lend our knowledge and resources to the fight against cancer. The Polestar family is in an impactful position to aid cancer patients and survivors alike reclaim their lives. According to the leading research, many forms of cancer are easily preventable. Avoiding harmful behaviors such as smoking and use of indoor tanning machines are a given. However, more effort needs to be made in promoting a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Thyroid, breast, esophagus, kidney and colon cancer have all been linked to an unhealthy lifestyle in some way.

“On World Cancer Day, we have an opportunity to collectively examine cancer control strategies to identify winning formulas that will accelerate progress. The goal for all of us is to ensure fewer people develop cancer, more people are successfully treated and that there is a better quality of life for people during treatment and beyond.”
-Heather Bryant, VP, Cancer Control, Canadian Partnership Against Cancer

What we can do:

Some cancers are largely preventable through proper diet and physical activity. Educators can easily make an impact in this way. You can be more vocal on your blogs and social media about cancer research and prevention. Having flyers and other informative content available in your studio would also greatly spread awareness. You may even be able to organize with your local cancer research center and hold classes especially made for survivors. Make your efforts known; join World Cancer Day’s campaign, Support Through Sport, to spread cancer awareness through sport. Call on your on your community and lend your voice here.

Exercise is important but a bit tricky for some people. 87 percent of all cancer diagnoses are to individuals 50 years of age or older. This creates a unique opportunity to focus on any older clients you may have in your class. It’s important we create a healthy space where survivors and the at-risk feel supported and understood. You and your group may even be motivated to start a donation fund in your studio. There are many great organizations that accept donations towards cancer research such as American Cancer SocietyNational Cancer InstituteLeukemia & Lymphoma Society, and many more that you can raise funds for.

No matter what way you contribute, you will make a difference. The Polestar family will make a difference. #WeCanICan

  1. Awesome website you have here but I was wondering if you knew of any user discussion forums that cover the same topics discussed in this article? I’d really like to be a part of group where I can get feed-back from other knowledgeable individuals that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Bless you!|
