Work Discipline… what is it? It’s about efficiency and accountability in the work place. That’s my interpretation.
I am Russell Goldman, General Manager of our Flagship Polestar Center. Believe it or not, I am not a Pilates Instructor and do not practice as much as I should. My interests are in business and I am always thinking of clean processes in which we can operate a quicker, faster, business model with minimal errors. The joke around the office is how can I leave the office at 5pm every day with such an important role in the company. The truth is, I force myself! After a decade in bank sales and endless 12-16 hour days I discovered that it’s not the amount of hours you put in but the quality of work you produce at work. Balance between work, family and outside interests is the key to being successful. I guess this is why I have been asked to write this blog.
I am responsible for everything that occurs at Polestar Center from open to close, 6 days a week. To be efficient, we have a staff that is well equipped to handle most situations and I am available at all times for situations that need extra attention. This includes nights and weekends. The secret to my success is to hit the ground running. Before I enter the office at 9am I have read all emails and am ready to approach my front desk staff with answers. The next step, once I do my walk through of the Center, is to make a list of 10-15 tasks that I WILL accomplish before 5pm. From that time until 5pm it’s a race against the clock to get these items accomplished, with many hurdles along the way. If I don’t happen to finish, I will be stuck doing them (as I am writing this blog) at 10:30 PM after the family is asleep. I am not one for water cooler conversations or breaks. My conversations usually pertain to work but I never cut-off anyone from sharing their personal stories. My lunch comes in a brown bag and I eat it in 10 minutes. When I get up from my desk to do a task I make sure I do not pass anyone without “how are you?” One of our values is relationships before business and I try to execute that core value throughout the day.
The ‘accountability’ in Work Discipline is the most important portion. Hold yourself accountable before you can ask others. If you cannot carry through on what you promise to other colleagues, then do not expect the same respect. This is probably the most difficult “task” you can assign yourself in any role you play in a company. As a General Manager, 75% of my “list of tasks” are for others that need my assistance. By meeting their needs I expect the tasks I delegate to them to be accomplished in a timely manner. This is a work discipline that we share throughout the company. With accountability you have responsibility, and I am ultimately responsible for all of my employees tasks. You can see me folding laundry, answering phones or accompanying Brent to look at property for our new Flagship Center. My staff knows that I would never ask them to do something without being prepared to do it myself. It’s a team effort.
To sum it up – I believe in quality versus quantity. The quality of your work is more important than the quantity of hours worked. Qualitative versus quantitative, sound familiar? I guess I truly am a Polestar Practitioner!
